Email newsletter #10

Mike-venerated newsletter subscriber,

From 2007 thru 2017, I was the nerd behind the OnGrid Tool. It was an industry-standard option for energy and money modeling. I met some of you thru your use of it (which was and is an awesome honor).

Andy Black has been quietly supporting it all these years (for the remaining die-hard users). Late last year, Andy gave OnGrid assets to me (his farewell note is here).

I decided that the right thing to do... was to make it free and open source. An OnGrid back story and the files are at the new OnGrid website.

Also, I got invited to teach again at the NABCEP CE conference (possibly the raddest technical conference in the galaxy). It's in Milwaukee, in the week of March 16th. I teach on the 19th. If you're in the industry, I'd love to kick it there (and please join my class... it's okay if you heckle).

My class description is very... strong nerd. The description is here.

I re-wrote the Slow Power homepage manifesto. And I updated the site's other webpages. I'm feeling it more now.

I'm a fan of the energy podcast Volts. The host is David Roberts. He recently interviewed a righteously-radical Swedish dude — Jonas Birgersson — who was an early architect and champion of fiber broadband internet. ...And a champion of the idea that broadband internet should be public infrastructure. He's now focused on applying his internet work to electric (micro)grids. With "electricity routers" "politely" managing electricity sharing between microgrids.

I'll be learning more and writing more about this. For now, I'll point you to that podcast episode here.

You being here means a lot to me. It's more than enough.

When I made the OnGrid Tool free and open source — forgoing the small remaining revenue — I decided to also put a hat out at the Slow Power website.

If you're getting something from Slow Power and would like to support... the new Give page is here.

Personal outro:

On April 24th, I'm competing in a 100-mile foot race. I'm stoked about it. Strength and grit will get me thru most of it... self loathing will take it from there (haha).

The longest foot race I've done is 50 miles. My related write-up is here.
